About Skywise Airlines

Skywise FleetSituated at OR Tambo International Airport, Skywise was another local budget airline.  They operated flights between Johannesburg and Cape Town only.  In February 2015, the airline took the sky but unfortunately service was suspended in November of the same year.  When Skywise started out, they offered 8 flights per day. There were big plans to boost the airline which included a new Boeing 737 as well as new flight routes into Africa.  In October of 2015 however, the airline was prohibited from taking off from Cape Town International Airport due to monies owed to Airports Company South Africa and Air Traffic & Navigation Services.  It was reported that R4 million was owed to ACSA and another R4 million to the ATNS.  In November of 2015, a lot of bad publicity resulted in Skywise being grounded by ACSA. Unfortunately this also resulted in job losses for about 200 employees.  Although Skywise is no longer in operation, Airlines SA still offers you plenty other flight options!

Corporate Affairs

The ownership of this airline consisted mainly of South Africans, including the Mandela family and the co-CEO Irfan Pardesi.  The other 20% belonged to CEO Tabassum Qadir.  Amongst others, the board of directors also included Michael Kaminski (ex 1Time board member), Javed Malik as well as Johan Borstlap (former manager at Sun Air).

Skywise targeted predominently the local black untapped segment of the market and in doing so created a niche for themselves. By entering the market, Skywise still offerend stiff competition for local domestic giants Kulula Airlines and Mango Airlines but didn’t compete for the same piece of the market.  Increased fuel prices and other airline related expenses like taxes and fees, put Skywise to a serious test.

The Fleet

The airline consisted of only 2 aircraft.  This included a Boeing 737-300 with a capacity of 142 passengers and a Boeing 737-500 that could carry 126 passengers.

Although Skywise bookings are not open anymore, you can still book cheap domestic flights using the Airlines SA booking engine above.  There are plenty other options available and Airlines SA will always return the cheapest prices first!
